What a thrilling showcase on Monday Night Football as quarterback Josh Allen earned his first career overtime victory, guiding the Buffalo Bills to a dramatic 37-34 win over the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium, a potential Super Bowl preview despite Los Angeles holding a 2-3 record.
Buffalo pulled off the road triumph after special teams blocked a field goal attempt in overtime from kicker Harrison Mevis, who was subsequently released by the Rams.
Josh Allen gets roasted by NFL fans over “big time flop” in loss to Patriots
The heart of the victory belonged to Allen, who put on another magnificent dual-threat performance, finishing with just 12 passes completed but with 210 passing yards, 121 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns, including two scores on the ground.
Josh Allen on a Historic Rushing Pace
With the victory, the Bills elevate their record to 4-1 while boasting the most explosive attack in professional football, averaging a league-leading 2.84 points per drive even while navigating the recent absence of receiver DJ Moore.
Driving that elite production is Allen’s MVP-caliber play. Through the first five weeks of the regular season, the superstar signal-caller has accumulated 1,249 passing yards and seven touchdown passes, but his impact on the ground has been truly historic.
Allen has compiled 239 rushing yards and a league-topping eight rushing touchdowns, marking the highest rushing touchdown total by any player through five games in 20 years.
The last player to match that blistering five-week goal-line mark was Shaun Alexander in 2005, when he ultimately set a then-NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns en route to MVP honors and a Super Bowl trip with Seattle.
Should Allen maintain this red-hot touchdown pace, he will approach legendary territory, solidifying his case to contend for his second career MVP trophy following his 2024 MVP campaign.
Even as critics highlight areas for improvement regarding his completion percentage, ball security, and overall passing touchdown totals, his raw playmaking dominance remains unmatched.
Up next, the Bills travel to face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6 before heading into their scheduled bye week, meaning their following game won't take place until November as Buffalo looks to lock down top seeding in the AFC.
