The United States Army has officially formalized its strategic partnership with Hanwha Aerospace by assigning the designation 'XM1776', which symbolizes the year of American independence, to the company's K9 wheeled self-propelled howitzer (K9MH).
Hanwha Aerospace revealed this designation on Oct. 13 (local time) at the Association of the United States Army annual exhibition 'AUSA 2026' held in Washington, D.C., with the attendance of U.S. Army Lieutenant General Frank Lozano, head of firepower acquisition. 1776 is the year of American independence, reflecting the hope that the K9 will become equipment that protects American freedom. The U.S. Army typically assigns a designation with an 'X' to equipment in the development and testing stages, and removes the X to use it as the official name upon formal adoption in the future.
This designation assignment holds great symbolism in terms of defense cooperation between South Korea and the United States. It is particularly unusual for a weapon system developed with South Korean technology to receive a name symbolizing the year of independence in the year marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. After signing a contract in August to supply K9MH prototypes for the U.S. Army's Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program, Hanwha Aerospace completed the delivery of the first prototype earlier this month, accelerating the pace of the project.
Hanwha Aerospace prepared a large-scale exhibition hall of 300 square meters at this exhibition and placed the actual K9MH at the front. The prototype manufactured in Changwon was urgently transported by air on Sep. 24 and installed at the site. The exhibition hall featured a large number of air defense systems covering land and sea, including the K9 tracked self-propelled howitzer, the K10 ammunition resupply vehicle, the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher, the medium-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM), and the long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM).
Unmanned systems and ammunition production capabilities were also emphasized. An armed unmanned surface vehicle (MUSV) for maritime operations and a C-UAS command and control system for drone detection and response were introduced, while the process of the ammunition production facility (HAMC) under construction at the Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA) in Arkansas was reproduced as a diorama. This facility is expected to become a core hub that vertically integrates the production of 155mm artillery shell components and propelling charges from raw materials to finished products.
Affiliate Hanwha Systems introduced its 'short-range AESA radar', specialized in defense against drones and small unmanned aerial vehicles, to the North American market for the first time. This equipment features the application of artificial intelligence (AI)-based detection and identification technology to precisely identify low-altitude threats, such as micro drones, which were difficult to capture with existing radars. Designed with an integrated structure, it can be mounted on various platforms, including tanks, armored vehicles, and small ships.
A Hanwha Aerospace official stated that the company has concentrated its ground defense capabilities in line with the U.S. Army's push for force modernization across all areas, including artillery and firepower, and announced that it will swiftly establish local production bases in Alabama and Arkansas along with the timely delivery of the XM1776 prototypes.
