In a notice shared on Saturday, October 24, the police said the entire stretch of the Southern Bypass between Ole Sereni Interchange and Kikuyu Town would be closed from midnight on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday, October 25.
The closure is intended to facilitate the 23rd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, which is expected to affect traffic movement along several roads in the capital.
Partial closures and security restrictions will also affect sections of Lang’ata Road and Ngong Road near Uhuru Gardens and Nairobi National Park.
Which roads will motorists use during the closure?
The National Police Service outlined alternative routes for motorists travelling from different parts of Nairobi and neighbouring areas.
Drivers coming from Mombasa Road or the Inland Container Depot (ICD) will be diverted onto Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway towards the Central Business District (CBD).
Those travelling from Western Kenya or using the Kikuyu Bypass will be directed to James Gichuru Road or Waiyaki Way, depending on their destination and onward route to the CBD or Mombasa Road.
Motorists from Lang’ata and Karen will have restricted access to the Southern Bypass. They have been advised to use Lang’ata Road, Dagoretti Road and Ngong Road as alternative routes, depending on where they are headed.
Drivers approaching from the Lenana area along Ngong Road and travelling towards Kikuyu should use Waiyaki Way via Naivasha Road or James Gichuru Road.
Those heading towards Mombasa Road from the same area have been advised to use Lang’ata Road via Karen Road.
What police said about traffic management
The National Police Service said it was working with relevant agencies to manage traffic and ensure the marathon proceeds smoothly.
Motorists have been urged to plan their journeys in advance, exercise patience and strictly observe traffic rules and regulations throughout the affected period.
Police also advised drivers to follow instructions from officers and marshals deployed along the affected routes to guide traffic and enforce the temporary arrangements.
The service warned that stern action would be taken against anyone found violating traffic rules during the operation.
