Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is out for the season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the football world is in shock.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Hurts “has been undergoing tests for days. Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk. He played without having slept,”
The treatment will take at least three months, per Rapoport.
Nicole Lynn, Hurts’ agent, released a statement saying, in part: “Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners.”
Hurts was injured two weeks ago when he took a cleat to the calf in a game against the L.A. Rams on Oct. 4. A few days later, he flew with the team to London for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But before the game his agent said an ultrasound revealed a “left calf superficial vein thrombosis.”
The day next Hurts still took the field and then underwent more testing back in Philadelphia, which revealed “deep vein thrombosis” and “pulmonary emboli” in the lungs."
“Well, it’s devastating,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said on First Take. “First of all, God bless him, his loved ones, his family, the Philadelphia Eagles organization. We wish him nothing but the best....
“I don’t know how this has happened ‚” he added. “...But I hope that at some point in time, once he discovers how this happened, he’s open and forthcoming about it so so many other people can be helped.
“Something like this happening, it’s very odd....But anything that you can do to that you think is going to help a lot of people out there, I think will go a long way....because all of us are sitting here saying, How in God’s name could that have happened? I’m so sad for him, but I’m glad they caught it.”
Smith said the Eagles, who already are dealing with injuries to Saquon Barkley and their offensive line and lost four straight, “are done.”
“I don’t see any way that their season recovers from Jalen Hurts being gone for the year,” he said. “I just don’t see how they can recover from that.”
He added: “Everything that can go wrong with an offense health-wise has gone wrong with the Philadelphia Eagles...The only thing you could say is thank God they caught it and that he wasn’t out on that football field while that was really, really happening. Lord knows what would have happened had that transpired.”
