Sakraba, Oct 18: The Seceku Sub-Region of the Naga National Council/Federal Government of Nagaland (NNC/FGN) inaugurated the Indo-Naga War Cemetery at Wüza, Sakraba, on Saturday, coinciding with Naga National Martyrs’ Day.
The cemetery has been established as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the Indo-Naga conflict, providing a dedicated site to commemorate their sacrifices and preserve the historical memory of the struggle.
Naga National Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on October 18, honours those who died during the Naga national movement. The observance is closely associated with Zasibito Nagi of Jotsoma village, whom Naga national organisations remember as the first Naga martyr.
According to historical accounts maintained by Naga organisations, Nagi was shot during a demonstration in Kohima on October 18, 1952. The protest was reportedly held against the alleged torture of a Naga youth in police custody in Dimapur. Nagi later succumbed to his injuries, and the date came to be observed in his memory and in remembrance of other Naga martyrs.
The inauguration of the cemetery added a memorial dimension to this year’s observance, offering a place to remember those associated with the conflict and reflect on the region’s political history.
The site is also intended to help younger generations understand the experiences and sacrifices that shaped the Naga national movement. Its establishment underscores the significance of preserving historical sites and documenting accounts of the past.
The inauguration and the annual observance together renewed attention to the legacy of the Indo-Naga conflict and the importance of keeping the memories of those who died alive for future generations.
