Oct. 16—CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney is unsurprisingly optimistic about Clemson football.
Even with a 3-2 (2-1 ACC) record to start 2026 and a new national pundit declaring the Swinney era almost over daily, he's the coach. He'll be the last to declare Clemson's glory days are done.
While he doesn't avoid blame — frequently saying Clemson isn't executing well and has yet to play its best game — he still takes the positive approach.
Clemson loses to LSU by 41 points, and Swinney said the now-22nd ranked and 4-2 Tigers might be one of the best teams in the country. Same before and after a 41-13 loss to No. 2 Miami, which really might be the best team in the country.
Now, he's feeling positive about Clemson's chances coming out of the bye week.
"We've got a seven-game season ahead and this time last year, we really weren't in the mix," he said on his Oct. 12 radio show. "We're still in it."
He also said after the Miami loss that Clemson's goal is to be in the mix at the end of the month. But what does that mean?
History suggests that "in the mix," may not be enough for Clemson — but there is a narrow chance.
The mix
When speaking of being in the mix come November, Swinney mentioned getting to 4-2 against Charleston Southern on Oct. 17 and finishing up the month on Oct. 24 against Virginia Tech. He didn't mention the Oct. 31 road trip to FSU on Halloween right before the month turns, but said Clemson would be in the mix if it handles business during October.
So it's safe to assume by "in the mix," Swinney means being a two-loss team entering the final month of the regular season. In theory, that would mean Clemson heads to Syracuse on Nov. 7 with a 6-2 (4-1 ACC) record.
During the Swinney era, that still hasn't been enough in most cases.
Clemson has entered November with two or more losses in six seasons since Swinney took over full-time in 2009. This season will be the seventh. Of the four seasons where it's happened since the College Football Playoffs began, Clemson has missed the playoff every time.
The Tigers still finished each season bowl eligible, but the playoffs were a step too far, and they reached the ACC Championship game once in 2009 after dropping two games before November.
It does seem a bit more promising when focused on the expanded playoff. Since the bracket moved to 12 teams in 2024, 12 teams have made the playoffs with two more losses. Ohio State won the 2024 national championship after making the tournament as a two-loss, at-large bid.
Even Clemson made the playoff at 10-3 in 2024. The Tigers started 6-1 before finishing the regular season 9-3 and sneaking into an ACC championship game with help from Syracuse.
Clemson defeated SMU in the conference title game and qualified for the playoff, falling to Texas in the first round.
Path forward
While Clemson and Alabama (the only three-loss, at-large pick) made the college football playoff despite multiple losses, notable two-loss teams Miami and Notre Dame were left off the brackets in 2024 and 2025 as consequence. The ACC didn't have a at-large bid last season, and it likely wouldn't in 2026 unless Miami doesn't win the ACC championship game and needs a bid.
That means Clemson's path to truly staying in the mix is winning out, including the ACC championship game. Simple, right?
While it sounds far-fetched given Clemson's efforts against ranked opponents this season, it isn't impossible. The Tigers might not have another ranked team on its schedule this season. Clemson doesn't play any of the teams — Wake Forest, Pitt and SMU — ahead of it in the ACC standings, but Wake Forest and SMU play each other, and Pitt plays undefeated Miami.
If Clemson finds a way to win out, there could be a spot in Charlotte, N.C., waiting for it. The issue is Miami would likely be waiting for the Tigers there, too.
The whole ordeal would likely be a temporary distraction from how far Clemson is from the top of the top where it used to reside. Just being in the mix doesn't get teams very far often. But without the mix, what else can the Tigers play for in 2026?
