At least five people are believed to be dead after a gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., on Thursday, according to multiple outlets. The shooter was also killed, authorities said.
Police first received reports of an active shooter at 12:59 p.m. local time, when an unknown man had fired a gun into a car before entering the school, where they continued shooting, according to the Bend Police Department.
Officers arrived on the scene within three minutes of the initial report. Moments later, the shooter was reported dead, potentially shot by a bystander, police said.
Authorities confirmed there had been multiple victims, including children, but did not disclose details. Two people were transported to a nearby hospital. Their status is unknown. It's unclear if the suspect was included among the five.
"We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook wrote in a statement. "We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders."
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency was on the scene assisting in the investigation.
Bend-La Pine Schools said it had set up a family reunification site nearby the school and that all of its schools would be closed on Friday, and any activities and athletic events would be canceled.
“As we learn more about the tragic event at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend today, we must come together and support each other, neighbor to neighbor, Oregonian to Oregonian,” Gov. Tina Kotek said in a statement. “No community should have to live through this day."
