If you’re planning a self-drive safari in Addo Elephant National Park, it can be tempting to think of the park as somewhere you can simply drive through in a couple of hours.
And technically, you can. But if your goal is to actually see elephants, lions, buffalo and other wildlife along the way, you’ll want to allow considerably more time.
Addo’s main game-viewing area has a network of tarred and gravel tourist roads, all of which are accessible to normal cars. The park’s speed limit is 40km/h, although SANParks recommends travelling at around 20–30km/h to get the most out of game viewing.
So, how long does it take to drive through ADDO?
The answer depends on which route you’re taking.
The most useful through-route for visitors is the road between Addo Main Camp and Matyholweni Gate in the south of the park.
SANParks lists the distance at approximately 39km, with the journey taking around two hours when travelling through the park. That two-hour estimate is not simply a matter of covering 39km at the speed limit, however.
The route is designed for game viewing, meaning drivers are expected to travel slowly and stop when wildlife is spotted.
A herd of elephants crossing the road can easily turn a short drive into a much longer experience.
Addo ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK driving times at a glance
| Route | Approximate distance | Approximate driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Main Camp to Matyholweni through the park | 39km | About 2 hours |
| Main Camp to Matyholweni around the park | 64km | About 45 minutes |
| Main Camp to Narina Bush Camp | 27km | About 45 minutes |
| Main Camp to Kabouga | 45km | About 50 minutes |
| Main Camp to Zuurberg office | 17km | About 15 minutes |
| Main Camp to Woody Cape | 105km | About 1h15 |
| Main Camp to Paterson | 22km | About 20 minutes |
SANParks notes that these times are approximate and can vary depending on stops and driving conditions.
If you’re visiting Addo specifically for wildlife, don’t plan your day around the minimum driving time.
A two-hour drive through the park is enough to cover the Main Camp-to-Matyholweni route, but it doesn’t necessarily give you enough time to explore the various loops, stop at viewpoints and waterholes or wait for animals to appear.
Instead, a half-day self-drive is a much more realistic option for first-time visitors who want to explore at a relaxed pace.
If you have a full day available, even better.
You can drive slowly, take different loops, stop at picnic sites and hides, and spend time at waterholes rather than constantly watching the clock.
Addo allows visitors to enjoy wildlife viewing in their own vehicles during the opening hours of the park’s game-viewing gates.
Don’t expect to drive at 40km/h all the way
Although the official speed limit is 40km/h, SANParks recommends 20–30km/h for maximum game-viewing enjoyment.
That makes sense when you consider what you’re actually looking for. An elephant standing 50 metres from the road can be easy to miss if you’re travelling too quickly.
The same applies to smaller animals, birds and animals partially hidden in Addo’s dense vegetation.
And, of course, wildlife can stop traffic completely. If elephants are crossing the road, the best thing to do is simply wait.
Can you drive Addo in a normal car?
Yes, you don’t need a 4×4 to explore the standard tourist roads in Addo.
SANParks says the entrance road and some tourist loops are tarred, while the gravel tourist roads are generally in good condition and accessible to normal vehicles. Some gravel roads may close during very wet weather.
You should also consider that setting out earlier is generally better for a self-drive safari.
The park’s gate times vary by season. SANParks currently lists summer game-area access from 05:30 to 18:30, while winter hours are generally 06:00 to 18:00.
Starting early gives you more time on the roads and a better chance of seeing animals before the heat of the day. It also means you aren’t rushing to get back to the gate before closing time.
What about the park’s other sections?
One thing first-time visitors should know is that Addo Elephant National Park is much larger than its main game-viewing section.
The park includes several different areas, including the Zuurberg, Kabouga and Woody Cape sections.
For example, the journey from Main Camp to Woody Cape covers approximately 105km and takes around one hour and 15 minutes according to SANParks.
However, that is not a typical game-viewing drive through the main elephant area.
Visitors planning a traditional safari should therefore focus their time on the main game-viewing section rather than trying to cover the entire Addo conservation area in one day.
