The Kebbi state government has rejected the report on poverty indices released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for lack of accuracy and transparency.
At a news briefing in Birnin Kebbi Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, averred that the UNDP premised its findings on the performance of the preceding government from 2018 in the first term of the Buhari administration.
Yakubu was particularly unhappy about the antics of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for exploiting the narrative by the UNDP which classified Kebbi as one of the poorest states in Nigeria.
“The gubernatorial candidate of the ADC, former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, has seized upon this so-called index to take delight in the misfortune of his own people, politicising their hardship for personal advantage.
“The report by the UNDP covers the period from 2018 to three years into the first term of the Buhari administration, under the very government Malami was a prominent figure.
“On the part of the Kebbi state government, incumbent Governor Nasir Idris has done everything possible to reposition Kebbi and uplift the living standards of its people in all sectors since assumption of power.
“It is therefore unfortunate that those who betrayed the late former President Buhari by helping themselves massively and recklessly from the public till, are now presenting themselves for election in a dubious attempt to secure immunity from the consequences of their actions while in office,” Yakubu stated.
