Zcash outpaced Bitcoin, Ether and Solana on Coinbase on Friday, extending the stronger recovery in selected crypto assets while Bitcoin traded below $82,000. The gains were uneven: ZEC's percentage advance against its rolling opening price was several times Bitcoin's.
Coinbase Exchange observations collected around 13:36 UTC on October 16 put Zcash at $1,217.60, up 11.81% against its rolling opening price. Bitcoin traded at $81,707.38, a 2.01% gain on the same type of comparison. Ether rose 4.98% to $2,453.74, while Solana gained 3.62% to $105.07.
That ranking shows strength beyond Bitcoin across the four assets examined. It does not establish that every altcoin is advancing or that money leaving one asset is directly financing purchases of another.
Zcash leads, with room still below its high
Coinbase's Zcash statistics showed a rolling range of $1,085.63 to $1,252.70. The latest price was well above the lower end but remained below the reported high. A double-digit rise against the opening price therefore coexisted with a retreat from the strongest trade in the window.
That is relevant to traders chasing the percentage gain. The opening-price return describes how far the asset has moved over the observation window, while the remaining distance to its high describes a different part of the move. A strong headline return does not mean a fresh high is being set at the moment of purchase.
The next test is whether Zcash can retain its relative strength through further trading. A move that holds while Bitcoin steadies would present a different picture from a quick reversal in which the largest recent gainer gives back ground fastest.
Ether and Solana also outperform Bitcoin
Ether and Solana both gained more than Bitcoin against their respective rolling opening prices. Their advances were smaller than Zcash's, leaving a clear difference between participation in the recovery and leadership of it.
Bitcoin's reported range was $80,007.77 to $82,831.01. Its latest price remained above the bottom of that range but below the $82,000 level regained in Thursday evening's rebound. That round number is a useful description of where the price is trading, rather than proof of a technical floor.
The four markets also have different starting points and volatility. Zcash's larger percentage gain does not make it cheaper than Bitcoin or establish the amount of capital entering either asset. Relative performance is useful evidence of price behavior, but it is not a valuation model.
Ether's reported range was $2,333.76 to $2,491.64, while Solana traded between $101.21 and $107.30. Both latest quotations were below their respective highs. The broader recovery therefore remained a recovery within observed ranges rather than four simultaneous new highs. Whether sellers continue to appear near those upper levels matters more to the next trade than the size of the gain already recorded from each opening price.
Fresh inflation data complicate the backdrop
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' September import-price release, published Friday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, showed US import prices rising 1.1% for the month and 8.1% over twelve months. Nonfuel import prices rose 0.7% monthly and 6.0% annually.
Export prices increased 2.2% for the month and 11.6% over a year. The data add another measure of inflation to the week, following the consumer- and producer-price releases.
Persistent price pressures matter for investors assessing financing conditions and the returns available on other assets. But this release does not establish an interest-rate decision, and the exchange statistics do not isolate its contribution to the crypto moves.
It is also possible for crypto prices to recover while the broader macroeconomic backdrop remains difficult. A rebound describes a price movement; it does not require every risk facing the market to have disappeared.
Execution matters after a sharp move
For a trader trying to enter a fast-moving market, the last quoted trade and the available price for an order are different things. The cost depends on spreads, the quantity offered and how much the order consumes. Our liquidity guide explains that relationship.
The same care applies to leverage. An asset that has risen sharply can still reverse enough to exhaust a small collateral buffer. A profitable move for an unleveraged holder can be a losing trade for someone entering later with a tightly constrained margin position.
These observations do not identify ETF inflows, short liquidations or the buyers behind the recovery. The supported conclusion is more specific: Zcash leads this group on Coinbase's rolling returns, Ether and Solana also outperform Bitcoin, and BTC has not retained all of Thursday evening's rebound.
