Alipay AI Pay has launched PAYATHON 2026, an annual hackathon that asks developers to plug payments into their AI apps, skills and agents and test them with real customers. The event was announced on October 24 together with an AI product community, according to IT Home and Leiphone. Registration closes on December 1, and the offline final is scheduled for December 26. The prize pool is 200,000 yuan.
The contest has five tracks. Two main tracks cover standalone apps and agent skills, built around what Alipay calls Vibe Pay and Skill Pay. Three more tracks, Token Pay, Machine Pay and Agent Pay, focus on usage-based billing, recurring subscriptions and transactions between machines and between agents.
What sets the event apart is how entries will be judged. Besides product completeness and technical execution, organizers list commercial performance and real user payments as key criteria. Alipay frames this as part of a developer-first strategy for AI Pay: reduce the work of collecting payments, delivering goods and setting prices so that small builders can turn working projects into products people pay for.
Alipay pointed to early developers already using the service. One team led by a content creator built a workflow tool for topic selection, scripts and cover design that had drawn more than 1,000 registered users and over 300 creators, but no paying customers. After 159 days of trying different payment setups, the team used an AI-readable integration guide, had Codex write the code, and went live in 73 minutes, receiving its first ten orders soon after, according to Alipay's account. An image-and-text generator called Redink received nine orders, and another developer building tools around CodexGuide and GPT-Image2 reported more than 500 real orders.
Those figures are case studies supplied by the organizers and have not been independently verified.
The hackathon reflects a wider shift in China's agent ecosystem from building tools to settling transactions. Payment platforms are competing to become the default checkout layer for skills and agents, and Alipay is betting that solving billing for one-person teams will draw developers into its AI Pay stack early.
