SMCC and Gibraltar Carlson top playoff divisions, Jefferson second

It’s been quite year for Monroe County Region football.

The quality of the teams is reflected in the latest playoff points released by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Nine of the Region’s 14 teams currently hold playoff spots heading into the final game of the regular season.

Gibraltar Carlson and St. Mary Catholic Central have the highest playoff points in the state for their divisions and Jefferson is No. 2.

More: Takeaways from Monroe County Region football games in Week 8

Bedford (No. 9 Division 2), Ida (No. 22 Division 5) and Whiteford (No. 22 Division 7) are solidly entrenched in playoff spots.

Monroe (No. 31 Division 2), New Boston Huron (No. 26 Division 3) and Flat Rock (No. 32 Division 5) probably need a win Friday to qualify. The top 32 teams in each Division will be included in the playoff field.

There are possibilities of several Region matchups ahead in the playoffs.

Carlson and Bedford, which have clashed in each of the past two years in the postseason, both are in Division 2.

Division 5 includes Jefferson, Ida and Flat Rock.

SMCC and Whiteford could end up meeting in Division 7, a rematch of their Week 1 game during the regular season.

Below are the playoff standings in all eight divisions for 11-man football.
