When Ginzburg first started his research into the witch trials, his hypothesis was that they could be seen as “a crude form of class struggle.” He swiftly found good evidence for his theory—and was disappointed. There must be something wrong, he thought, with a hypothesis that can be demonstrated so quickly: To find only what you are looking for is to learn nothing at all.
