The high court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of actor and former Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty in a fraud case.
Justice Debangsu Basak rejected the plea.
According to the prosecution, Soham allegedly took ₹15 lakh from Tarun Das, a trader in Balurghat, to act in a film he was producing.
The agreement was allegedly signed in 2017, and a cheque was issued from Trina Film Industry’s account at a Baguiati bank branch in 2018.
Chakraborty allegedly did not return the sum despite not performing the role. Das then lodged a complaint at Balurghat police station.
In May 2026, Das allegedly approached Chakraborty’s manager, Suman Karmakar. Instead of refunding the amount, Karmakar allegedly threatened to file a defamation case.
Apprehending arrest, Soham moved the court seeking protection from arrest.
He represented Chandipur in the Assembly between 2016 and 2021. He lost the 2026 Assembly election.
