Doing the laundry is part of everyone's weekly routine, but it's not always as straightforward as it seems
One week's laundry may include muddied jerseys, while another week's laundry may involve a set of newly bought basic tees.
Reality hits when you're forced to think about how much detergent to use, or if your favourite shirt's fabric can actually survive the dryer.

Before you go to YouTube or TikTok for help, we've helped compile five simple tips to make laundry days easier:
1. Sort by care label, not just by colour
Separating whites and colours is logical, but two black tops might still need very different treatment.
Check the care labels for washing temperature, cycle, and drying instructions, then group clothes with similar requirements.

Keep items that need a delicate cycle separate from your regular load, and set aside anything labelled hand-wash or dry-clean only.
You also need to consider towels, as they can shed lint onto other clothes, so avoid mixing them with fabrics that readily collect it.
Do this first: Check a new garment's label before its first wash so that it doesn't shrink or get damaged after the first wash or drying cycle.
2. Attend to food stains before washing
A sambal splash or oily curry mark needs attention before you put it in for washing.
Lift off any excess sauce with a spoon, then blot away stain liquid with a clean white cloth. Avoid scrubbing the spill, which can spread the stain and damage fibres.

For washable fabrics, apply a suitable liquid laundry detergent or prewash stain remover directly to the mark. Follow the product's instructions for how long to leave it, and test it on a hidden area first.
Then wash at a temperature allowed by the garment's care label. This is a practical first step for food stains, although stubborn marks may need stronger treatment.
Do this first: Keep your stain-treatment product near the laundry basket so marked clothes get attention before wash day.
3. Measure detergent instead of pouring until it feels right

An extra splash of detergent can feel reassuring, especially after a sweaty day out. But too much can leave residue on clothes and make rinsing less effective.
Use the measuring cap or scoop and follow the pack's guide for your load size and how dirty the clothes are.
Pay attention when switching brands or buying a concentrated formula: the same capful may contain a different amount of detergent.
Also check that the detergent is suitable for your machine.
Do this first: Read the dose markings on the cap. A full cap isn't automatically the right amount for every wash.
4. Leave room for clothes to move

If you're pushing clothes down to squeeze in one more towel, it's better to split the load.
Clothes need space to move during washing. Packing the drum tightly can affect cleaning and rinsing, even if the door still closes.
Load items loosely and follow your machine's instructions for the selected programme. Don't assume every cycle takes the machine's maximum advertised capacity.
Do this first: Plan around the load your chosen cycle can handle, rather than trying to clear the entire basket in one go.
5. Check stains and care labels before switching on the dryer
Before drying a previously stained item, check whether the mark has actually disappeared.
If it remains, pretreat and wash it again first, as dryer heat can make some stains harder to remove.
Next, check the garment's drying instructions. Something that's machine-washable isn't necessarily suitable for tumble drying, and dryer-safe items may still need a lower heat setting.
Do this first: Make checking stained clothes part of unloading the washer, before they disappear into the next load.
