The Charlotte Hornets have made their biggest commitment yet to the future of their franchise.
Charlotte has agreed to a five-year, $209 million rookie-scale contract extension with forward Brandon Miller, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
The agreement comes just before Monday's deadline for players from the 2023 NBA Draft class to sign rookie-scale extensions, securing one of Charlotte's most important young players for the foreseeable future.
Miller, 23, is entering his fourth NBA season after establishing himself as one of the Hornets' most productive offensive players.
The former Alabama standout averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists across 65 games last season, showing continued development despite battling a shoulder injury.
His production has reinforced Charlotte's confidence in the player it selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, immediately behind San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. However, the significance of Miller's extension goes beyond his individual numbers.
The Hornets traded longtime franchise centerpiece LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves during the offseason, creating an opportunity for Miller to take on greater offensive responsibility.
Charlotte is now building around a younger core that includes Miller and promising second-year guard Kon Knueppel.
With Ball no longer leading the offense, Miller could become the team's primary scoring option as the Hornets attempt to establish a new identity.
The financial commitment also places Miller among the highest-paid young players from his draft class. His $209 million agreement exceeds the five-year, $208 million extension signed by Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson, underscoring Charlotte's belief in Miller's potential.
The Hornets are hoping that investment translates into meaningful progress after narrowly missing the playoffs last season.
Charlotte reached the NBA play-in tournament but saw its postseason hopes end with a loss to the Orlando Magic.
Miller's ability to create his own shot, stretch the floor and contribute defensively gives the organization a foundation to build around.

Still, his next challenge will be translating individual production into consistent team success.
The Hornets open their regular season Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets, beginning a new chapter without Ball.
For Miller, the extension provides long-term security. For Charlotte, it establishes who the organization believes can lead its next generation.
The Hornets have committed $209 million to that vision. Now, Miller has an opportunity to prove he can become the franchise player they believe he is.
