The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has inducted the first set of 111 nursing graduates of Maryam Abacha University of Nigeria (MAAUN) into the nursing profession.
The maiden induction and oath-taking ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre.
Speaking shortly after administering the oath, the Registrar of the Council, Dr Alhassan Ndagi, congratulated the inductees on their remarkable achievement. He urged them to uphold the demands of the profession by respecting the dignity and well-being of every patient under their care.
He further charged them to remain committed to the profession, pursue further education, participate in professional development programmes, and embrace technological advancements, which he described as essential trends in modern healthcare.
The Registrar also urged the inductees to maintain the highest ethical standards in nursing practice and exercise caution in their use of social media.
He explained that, following the administration of the oath, the inductees had been certified by the Council to practise nursing, subject to completing the mandatory one-year internship at an accredited health facility in the country.
In his remarks, the Founder of the MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, congratulated the newly inducted nurses on reaching the milestone and urged them to be good ambassadors of MAAUN wherever they found themselves.
He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to producing professionals capable of competing favourably with their counterparts across the world.
Also speaking, the President of MAAUN, Prof Mohammad Israr, described nursing as one of the noblest and most respected professions in the world.
He noted that the profession is built on compassion, dedication, sacrifice and a commitment to saving lives and serving humanity.
“Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, providing care, comfort and hope to patients and their families,” Prof Israr said.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the School of Nursing, Dr Umar Lawal Bello, said the induction and oath-taking ceremony marked a new chapter in the lives of the graduates.
He also expressed appreciation to the university’s founder and other members of the management for their support in ensuring the success of the programme.
The induction lecture, titled “Improving the Image of the Nursing Profession Through Sustaining Its Core Values”, was delivered by Prof S. N. Garba of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano.
Prof Garba highlighted five core values of the nursing profession, which are reinforced through ethical training: altruism, professionalism and clinical autonomy, human dignity and patient advocacy, integrity and good moral standards, and leadership and collaboration.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding students in recognition of their academic performance, as well as to individuals who contributed to the students’ success.
The maiden induction ceremony was attended by members of the university’s management, invited guests, parents and distinguished nursing professionals from across the country.
