The Federal Government has withdrawn an existing eight-count criminal charge against Adeniyi Adeyemi, the alleged Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), and filed fresh charges against him at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, disclosed this before Justice Muhammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Oyedepo told the court that the Attorney-General of the Federation had reviewed Adeyemi’s case file and the charge initially filed by the Inspector-General of Police, identifying legal issues that required a fresh approach.
He explained that some of the documents allegedly forged by Adeyemi in connection with the purported agency fell within the jurisdiction of the FCT High Court rather than the Federal High Court.
The prosecution consequently urged Justice Umar to strike out the existing charge to allow the matter to proceed before the appropriate court.
Counsel to Adeyemi, Ibrahim Angulu, SAN, did not oppose the application.
Justice Umar subsequently struck out the eight-count charge, bringing the existing proceedings before the Federal High Court to an end.
Oyedepo said the government would ensure that Adeyemi was arraigned afresh before the FCT High Court without delay.
The withdrawal of the charge followed the review of the case by the Attorney-General of the Federation, with the prosecution seeking to address the jurisdictional issues identified.
Adeyemi is accused of operating a purported government agency known as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and allegedly forging documents in connection with its activities. The allegations have yet to be established in court.
