BUSAN — A forum is being staged to intelligently repurpose data accumulated across the maritime industry and apply cutting-edge artificial intelligence to create new value in shipping and shipbuilding.
The Korean Register (KR) said on the 12th that it will hold the "KR Digital Technology Seminar 2026" at the Oakwood Premier Hotel COEX Center in Seoul at 1:30 p.m. on the 15th. Now in its fifth year, the seminar will discuss data utilization, AI application cases and the direction of digital transformation at industrial sites under the theme of "Data Intelligence and AI Innovation in the Maritime Industry."
The first session will introduce MariSpace, a spatial information platform that renders a ship's interior as a three-dimensional space to manage related information, along with guidelines for approving ship designs based on 3D models. The session focuses on integrated management of ship information in a digital environment and on improving the efficiency of design reviews.
The second session will concentrate on AI and data-based technical services. Key items include the results and challenges of a proof of concept (PoC) for shipboard robots, an AI-based web service for integrated access to classification rules, the development of a data hub for ship performance analysis, and the development of an AI agent for shipbuilding design. The aim is to broaden the use of data tied to classification work, shipbuilding design and ship operations to improve the efficiency of technical services.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Chang Dong-in, a professor at the KAIST Graduate School of AI. Under the title "How to Become a Top AI Expert in the Age of Vibe Coding," the lecture will address the changing role of engineers amid the spread of generative AI and code automation, and strategies for building the necessary skills.
KR said it plans to share experience in data utilization and AI application in the maritime industry through the seminar and to expand cooperation across the sector. Participation is available through advance online registration or on-site registration.
"The competitiveness of the maritime industry depends on how intelligently accumulated data is used," said Kim Dae-heon, head of KR's research division. "We hope this will serve as an opportunity to share the latest AI application cases and lead to substantive technical cooperation."
