A team of doctors at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences has successfully removed a nail cutter from the stomach of a young man through endoscopy. The 20-year-old patient had accidentally swallowed it.
“Ganesh Koppad of the Gastroenterology Department and a team of other doctors, including senior gastroenterology experiment technician Deepak Kengeri, led the operation. Extracting the nail cutter from the stomach was a medically challenging task,” director Vinay Dastikoppa said.
The patient was treated in the hospital for a few days and then discharged. He is now back to normal. There was no need for surgery,” the doctors said.
The hospital carries out over 800 endoscopy procedures per year. They include ERCP and EVL procedures involving dilatation of the narrowed part of the digestive tract and bulging of the blood vessels. These methods play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases related to the digestive system.
Chief Administrative Officer Reshma Talikoti, Medical Superintendent Jagdish Ganagi and others have congratulated the doctors and staff.
The teaching hospital also treats a large number of poor people from Maharashtra and Goa, said a release.
