Citizens who miss the giant panda sent back to China have taken to the streets.
A civic group calling itself the Coalition Urging Fu Bao's Return held a rally on the morning of Oct. 15 in front of Sarangchae, the visitor center at the Blue House, the former presidential compound in Seoul, calling on the government to bring the giant panda Fu Bao back to South Korea.
The group said photos and videos released since the panda's return to China show changes in Fu Bao's appearance and behavior, raising concerns about her health. It demanded that information be disclosed transparently on whether she is receiving proper veterinary care and what kind of environment she lives in.
The group also urged the South Korean government to actively consult with Chinese authorities to examine the possibility of her return, and to give the public a responsible account of whether it is pursuing the matter and how any talks are progressing.
"Fu Bao is family," the group said. "Please keep looking for a way, to the very end, so that she can live in good health and, if possible, return to her home in South Korea."
Fu Bao was born in July 2020 at Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and became a national favorite. Public interest has continued since she was returned to China in April 2024, along with persistent concerns over her health and living conditions.
