Prof. Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, the Founder and Chancellor of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, has died after a prolonged illness.
The royal family of HRH Eze Cyril Ibe, Okwelube I of Amaokwe Achara Autonomous Community, announced the sad news on Monday.
The statement said Ibe died on Saturday and described him as a distinguished academic, administrator, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and educationist who dedicated his life to expanding access to education, uplifting the less privileged, and serving humanity.
“Through Gregory University Uturu, Skill ‘G’ Ltd., Innov8 Hub and other initiatives, he touched thousands of lives, leaving an enduring legacy in education and community development,” the family said.
He is survived by six children and seven grandchildren.
The family expressed gratitude for the prayers and messages of sympathy they have received. They also asked for continued prayers for his peaceful rest and for strength for the family during this time.
They said funeral arrangements will be shared later and asking the public to respect their privacy while they mourn.
Ibe, who was a Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies, ran as the All Progressives Grand Alliance governorship candidate in Abia State during the 2023 election.
During the election, he supported shifting power to Abia North, referring to the Abia Charter of Equity.
Reports say he began facing health issues as political activities for the 2023 elections increased, and he was rarely seen in public afterwards.
However, he did attend his mother’s burial earlier this year.
The late professor was a well-known Igbo entrepreneur and investor. He was also recognised for his philanthropy, especially his support for undergraduates on scholarship at Gregory University.
