LAHORE: An inquiry has been launched into the death of a suspect, identified as Usman, while in police custody in Lahore, with authorities also considering a judicial inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to a police spokesperson, DIG Operations has directed a senior superintendent of police (SSP) to investigate the incident and submit a report.
The spokesperson said South Cantt police had taken Usman into custody on suspicion of fraud after he allegedly concealed his identity and impersonated a government official.
Police claimed that the suspect’s condition suddenly deteriorated while officers were completing the first information report (FIR).
He was subsequently shifted to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology through Rescue 1122 for medical treatment.
According to police, doctors provided medical assistance to the suspect for approximately 50 minutes, but he died after suffering cardiac arrest during treatment.
The police spokesperson said a post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
DIG Operations has also decided to refer the matter for a judicial inquiry to ensure transparency in the investigation.
Video emerges as probe continues into deaths of two women in Lahore police custody
Earlier in August, two women, Anmol and Amna, died while in police custody in Lahore’s Township area. Video footage recorded shortly before their arrest later emerged, showing the women arguing with residents of B Block in Township.
According to reports, the residents were demanding the return of money they alleged had been taken in a robbery.
Police said the two women were handed over to the investigation wing after a case was registered.
The footage shows the women attempting to leave the scene before police arrived. Lahore Police said the mobile phone video had been incorporated into the inquiry into the incident.
