In a news release, Health P.E.I. said the move was in response to increased respiratory illness activity across the province and for continued patient safety.
Health P.E.I. said members of the public will be asked to wear a mask when within two metres of a patient and masking will be encouraged in hallways of acute care settings.
Jillian Nixon, Health P.E.I.’s director of occupational health, safety and wellness, said masking during respiratory illness season protects everyone, including patients, staff and the public.
“Masking is just one proactive step we can take to help keep the system stable,” she said.
The news release said Health P.E.I. staff have guidelines for when they may remove masks.
Staff will also follow current infection control procedures, including proper hand hygiene, staying home when sick and reporting any respiratory illness to their manager or supervisor, Health P.E.I. said.
Masks will be available at entrances to Health P.E.I. facilities.
Health P.E.I. also said it will update the masking policy as soon as it is safe to do so.
