BUSAN — The Busan Infrastructure Corporation will revoke use permits and begin the first round of removals for remains held at public charnel facilities in Busan Yeongnak Park and Busan Chumo Park, where the authorized term has expired and families have not filed for an extension.
The corporation said on the 15th that it is issuing a public notice of removal covering a total of 1,574 sets of remains whose 30-year term has expired, under Articles 4 and 9 of the Busan Metropolitan City Ordinance on Funeral Services. They include 952 sets in the charnel hall at Busan Yeongnak Park, along with 501 in the charnel hall, 31 in charnel walls and 90 in charnel graves at Busan Chumo Park.
The corporation set Jan. 31 as the deadline for collection and called on relatives and other interested parties to come forward. Relatives must visit Busan Yeongnak Park or Busan Chumo Park during the notice period to collect the remains together with memorial tablets, photographs and other personal belongings. To take custody of the remains, they must submit documents proving their relationship to the deceased, such as a family relationship certificate or a removed family register.
Remains not collected by the deadline will be removed and temporarily placed in rooms for the unclaimed at Busan Yeongnak Park and Busan Chumo Park, in line with relevant law. The corporation plans to keep them there for five years before burying them together.
"We ask relatives of those whose remains are held at these facilities to review the notice and take an active interest, so that they can collect the remains and their treasured personal belongings within the set period," a corporation official said.
Details including the list of affected cases, removal procedures and how to take custody of remains are available on the Busan city website or in the notice sections of the Busan Yeongnak Park and Busan Chumo Park websites.
