Shillong, Oct 19: The East Khasi Hills District Police and Shillong Traffic Police have issued a traffic advisory to manage vehicular movement during Durga Puja celebrations and idol immersion in Shillong, with restrictions planned across several parts of the city.
The advisory outlines phase-wise traffic diversions around major commercial and residential areas to prevent congestion and ensure the smooth movement of devotees and immersion processions.
Traffic restrictions across key areas
In the Sadar and Laban areas, entry points around GOs’ Quarter Junction, Forest Colony, Oakland, Harrison Bridge and Oxford Junction will be closed to regular traffic between 2 pm and 4 pm. Commuters will be diverted through Jail Road Petrol Pump, Lawmali, Golf Club and Circuit House.
In the Lumdiengjri and Rynjah sectors, restrictions near District Council Point, Mahavir Park and RR Colony will come into effect between noon and 4 pm. Traffic will be redirected towards Motphran and BSNL Quarter routes.
In the Laitumkhrah area, restrictions will begin as early as 8 am around Ram Krishna Mission, the Fire Brigade Pandal and Law College, with vehicles directed towards designated main-road routes.
Special arrangements for immersion day
On Wednesday, October 21, special traffic arrangements will be enforced from 8 am to facilitate idol immersion processions.
The stretches from CS Junction to 4th Furlong Junction and BK Bajoria Junction to 4th Furlong Junction will be reserved exclusively for trucks and vehicles transporting idols. Regular private vehicles will not be permitted on these stretches during the restrictions.
Commuters travelling through Polo Point, 4th Furlong and BK Bajoria will be diverted via Bivar Road, Oakland Post Office Junction and Commerce College.

No-parking restrictions around pandals
Parking will be prohibited on both sides of several roads, including the stretch from Laban Police Station to Circuit House, Howell Road to Batti Bazaar, RR Colony Main Road, Paltan Bazaar, and Trenching Ground Road to Jhalupara.
A 100-metre no-parking zone will also be enforced around all active Durga Puja pandals across the city to prevent traffic bottlenecks and keep access routes clear for emergency services.
The police have advised residents and visitors to plan their journeys in advance, use designated public parking areas and follow diversion signs and instructions from traffic personnel.
Ambulances, fire tenders and other emergency vehicles will be allowed unrestricted access throughout the festivities.
The traffic arrangements aim to ensure that devotees can participate in the celebrations while minimising disruption to daily commuters and facilitating the smooth conduct of the October 21 immersion processions.
