In life, we all have different journeys. Some people achieve their goals at a young age, while others take many years to get where they want to be. But one thing remains important: never stop investing in yourself.
One of the greatest investments a person can make is education.
Having a qualification is more than having a piece of paper. It is evidence of commitment, discipline, sacrifice, and the willingness to learn. It can give a person knowledge and skills that can be used to build a career and contribute to society.
In Namibia, finding employment can be challenging, especially for young people. This is why I believe obtaining a qualification is important. Although a qualification does not guarantee employment, it can increase your chances of being considered for opportunities that require specific skills and educational qualifications.
However, we should not study simply because everyone else is studying.
Choosing the right career requires careful thinking. Young people should ask themselves: What am I good at? What do I enjoy doing? What career do I want in the future? What qualifications are required for that career?
Researching a career before choosing a qualification is extremely important. It can prevent people from spending years studying something they have little interest in, or that does not match their abilities.
Parents, teachers, and friends can provide guidance, but the final decision should be made carefully by the individual. After all, you are the one who will have to live with your career choice.
I also believe that we should stop looking down on people who start their education later in life. There is no expiry date on education.
Some people have financial difficulties. Others have family responsibilities or must work while studying. Some may even fail a course or programme before eventually succeeding.
That should not be the reason for giving up. Failure is not always the end of the journey. Sometimes, it is part of the journey.
The important thing is to learn from your mistakes, get back up, and continue moving forward.
We should also understand that qualifications alone do not make someone successful. A qualification must be supported by hard work, good character, practical experience, communication skills and a willingness to continue learning. The world is changing quickly, and what we know today may not be enough tomorrow. This means that learning should not stop when we graduate. We must continue developing ourselves.
To young people who are currently studying, my message is simple: do not give up.
There may be days when you feel tired. There may be moments when you question whether the sacrifice is worth it. Keep going. Your current situation does not determine your future. Choose your career carefully. Research it. Understand what is required. Work hard towards your qualifications and most importantly, believe in yourself.
A qualification may not open every door, but it can certainly give you more keys to try.
Invest in yourself today because the knowledge and skills you gain can shape the opportunities you receive tomorrow.
