Students and school pupils marched through central Thessaloniki on Thursday, demanding increased state funding for public education, better student welfare and housing support, and safer school facilities as part of a nationwide mobilisation in Greece.
Teachers’ union members and workers’ associations from the public and private sectors joined the demonstration, supporting calls to address the rising cost of living and improve conditions across the education system.
The demonstrators gathered at Dikastirion Square, near the Venizelos statue, before marching along Egnatia, Agias Sofias, Tsimiski and Venizelou streets to the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace.
Protesters demanded greater state funding for public education, stronger student welfare and accommodation support, measures to address the rising cost of living, the filling of vacant teaching positions, permanent appointments for substitute teachers, and modern, safe school buildings.
Following the march, representatives of student and school pupil associations met at the Thessaloniki Labour Centre to coordinate further action. They decided to join a march scheduled for October 30 as part of an International Day of Action involving 60 ports worldwide.
“From Greece to France, we fight for free public education,” demonstrators chanted throughout the protest.
The march ended peacefully. Police officers remained on standby at several locations across the city centre to prevent potential incidents.
