The main suspect arrested in connection with the suicide case of student Laiba Ejaz died after being wounded during an armed attack on an Islamabad Police team in the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station, according to a police spokesperson.
The deceased suspect was identified as Muhammad Nauman.
Islamabad Police said officers were taking Nauman for a recovery operation based on information and identification provided by him during the investigation.
However, while the police team was travelling with the suspect, four alleged accomplices riding two motorcycles reportedly emerged from hiding and opened indiscriminate fire on the officers.
Police said the attackers intended to free Nauman from custody.
During the firing, Nauman was struck by bullets allegedly fired by his own associates and sustained injuries. The police team remained unharmed because officers were wearing bulletproof jackets and had taken other safety precautions.
Police immediately shifted the injured suspect to a hospital for medical treatment. However, Nauman later succumbed to his injuries.
According to Islamabad Police, Nauman was an accused in the case involving Laiba Ejaz, a student who died by suicide within the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station.
Police have launched search operations to trace and arrest the other suspects allegedly involved in the attack. Authorities said further investigation into the incident is underway.
