The Big Ten Conference admitted on Sunday that its officials made a clear mistake during Oregon’s loss to UCLA on Saturday. The league stated that the ball was spotted in the wrong place for the Ducks’ final two-point conversion attempt. This error happened with just over two minutes left in the game when Oregon was trying to tie the contest.
Officials spotted the ball at the 1.5-yard line after a facemask penalty. They should have placed it at the half-yard line. This small distance changed the outcome of a play that would have tied the game at 17-17. The conference confirmed the error in a statement released after the game ended.
The Confusing Spot Rule
Rules about where to spot the ball after a penalty can get messy fast. The Big Ten said the second attempt should have been from the half-yard line. The location lies halfway between the goal and the spot where the initial attempt concluded. Instead, the officials placed it half the distance from the original line of scrimmage. That is a big difference when you are only a few feet from the end zone.
According to reports, the error occurred with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s UCLA-Oregon game. The statement from the conference read: “With 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s UCLA-Oregon game, Big Ten officials incorrectly officiated Oregon’s final two-point conversion attempt.” The league said it has spoken with the officiating crew and will work to ensure the rules are applied correctly in the future.
What This Cost Oregon
The Ducks lost by two points, 17-15. If the ball had been spotted correctly, Oregon would have had a much better chance to tie the score. Even with the bad spot, the team could not convert the play. UCLA’s defense held firm, and the game ended with the Bruins winning their biggest game of the Bob Chesney era.
Oregon now sits at 3-2 on the season. The team faces Nebraska on October 17 with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The loss to UCLA leaves the Ducks with two defeats and a quarterback room in chaos. Dylan Raiola was benched during the game after throwing two interceptions. He finished with 43 yards and a completion rate of just 32 percent.
Third-stringer Brock Thomas replaced Raiola but could not save the game. On the two-point conversion that could have tied the game, Thomas came up short. The Ducks also committed seven turnovers in total. This sloppy performance puts their playoff hopes on life support after a deep run last season.
A Wake-Up Call for the Program
This officiating error is real, but it does not fix the bigger problems. The Ducks had chances to win the game even with the bad spot. The offense looked nonexistent all season, and the quarterback situation remains a mess. Dan Lanning’s team has no answers right now.
According to Yahoo Sports, things will become clearer in the coming weeks as Oregon plays Raiola’s former team. The coach and staff must decide if Raiola can restore faith or if his time in Eugene is truly underwhelming. The Big Ten admitted its mistake, but the Ducks must now fix their own issues to survive the rest of the season.
