We are mere episodes into Avatar: Seven Havens, and reader, I am in love. When a certain kind of man shows up in any video game, television show, movie, comic book, or novel (assuming the description the author provides gets the vibe across), my single brain cell activates. The Paramount+ show landed a critical hit on my neurons, as the sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra has a man I’m about to subscribe to the streaming service for…so please don’t make Captain Karthik a surprise villain, y’all.
Karthik is a member of the Order of the White Lotus organization, an air-bender capable of manipulating the winds around him, and also basically new Avatar Nisha’s surrogate father. He is also, most importantly, Daddy.
Oh my good golly gosh, the folks at Avatar Studios cooked here. His scruff; the white streaks coming in underneath his brown hair; his tired, puppy dog eyes; and the way he’s protective and stern while also deadpan exhausted trying to keep up with the show’s twin-sister leads. He is gentle and calm, and also raises his voice when he has to for the good of those around him. Thankfully, the rest of the Avatar community agrees that he’s a tall glass of water, so I won’t be lacking good, tantalizing fan art and thirst edits of him for the foreseeable future. He is perfect. I’ll take one, please.

However, there are a few scenes in the show already that have some fans on guard, and since I’m attracted to him, statistically speaking based on my lifetime of media viewing experience, he’s probably gonna turn out to be a twist-reveal villain at some point in the show’s run. He’s forceful with his orders and beliefs, and at one point, he scolds Nisha, and tells her to “remember [her] place.” While this is perhaps justifiable in a world that has learned to treat the Avatar with suspicion, it certainly places him in opposition to the show’s two leads.
While this moment is certainly a jarring tone-setter that makes fans think he might be less upstanding than he appears at the outset, fans are already starting to theorize whatever this antagonism is rooted in might go much deeper. This speculation is based on a few points, such as him taking care of Nisha when she was presumably separated from her twin sister Pavi, who is also an Avatar capable of manipulating all the elements, leading fans to believe that at the very least, he might know something about the sisters that the rest of the cast doesn’t, and that Nisha can’t reveal as she has lost her memories. What could he be hiding? Is it something actively evil and malicious, such as that he kidnapped her at a young age? Is he just a hard ass, or could he plan to use the Avatars’ powers for his own gain? Or is there something much, much deeper going on here?
“I don’t think Karthik is power hungry or malicious,” a fan writes on Reddit. “I think his heroic intentions are genuine, it’s just that he believes he’s the only one capable of making the right calls and when push comes to shove he’s willing to kill others for what he considers to be for the greater good.”
Admittedly, him being a secret villain with bad intentions would make for a more interesting story than something where he’s just kinda straightforwardly noble and strict, but I want to believe a man can look like that and not be evil. Is that too much to ask in this life?
