A fresh earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude struck Panama on Monday evening local time, days after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake damaged homes and infrastructure across several parts of the country.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the latest tremor was recorded at 4:50:37 am IST on Tuesday at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre was located at latitude 7.683 degrees north and longitude 81.405 degrees west.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) separately reported a magnitude 6 earthquake at a depth of 35 km.
The latest tremor comes after Panama experienced a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Friday, followed by hundreds of aftershocks. The earlier quake caused widespread damage, prompting the government to declare a national state of emergency over the weekend.
Emergency authorities reported that at least 27 people were injured and nearly 900 homes were damaged. No deaths had been reported, although officials warned that the figures could change as assessments continued in remote communities.
The provinces of Los Santos, Coclé, Veraguas and Herrera were among the worst-affected areas.
The earlier earthquake damaged homes, schools, healthcare facilities, roads, hotels, churches and public buildings. The government declared a state of emergency to coordinate rescue and relief efforts, while President José Raúl Mulino ordered the formation of a commission to oversee assistance and the allocation of resources.
The tremors also disrupted transport services. Panama’s metro temporarily suspended operations on two lines, while the country’s main international airport was briefly closed as a precaution before services resumed. Patients at an affected hospital in Penonomé were evacuated and treated outdoors.
Authorities have continued monitoring seismic activity following the powerful quake and the subsequent aftershocks. Although the latest tremor has raised concerns, there were no immediate reports of fresh casualties or property damage from Monday’s earthquake, according to the Associated Press.
India also expressed solidarity with Panama following the October 9 earthquake. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India’s thoughts and prayers were with those injured and affected by the disaster, particularly families facing hardship.
