KT Cloud said on the 22nd that it has broken ground on a 50-megawatt artificial intelligence data center in Ansan.
The facility, to be built in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, is intended to expand the supply base for high-density AI infrastructure in the greater Seoul area. Completion is targeted for 2029. Given the high-density, high-heat characteristics of AI servers, the design incorporates requirements for AI server deployment across power, cooling and building structure. The building will have a total floor area of about 36,878 square meters, with two basement levels and nine above-ground floors. Total power receiving capacity is 50 MW.
The Ansan data center will be equipped with power infrastructure capable of stably supplying electricity to high-density AI servers. All server rooms will be designed to accommodate liquid cooling. Following the data center in Seoul's Gasan-dong that opened last year, the new site will also feature cooling facilities for high-heat AI servers. The company adopted a high-load structure in anticipation of the introduction of high-performance graphics processing units such as Nvidia's Vera Rubin. The aim is to allow new servers to be installed in the building even as server density rises or equipment specifications change.
A high-efficiency free-cooling system will also be introduced to improve cooling energy efficiency. Cooling coils will be installed on the exterior walls to make use of natural wind at the top of the building. Linked to a closed-circuit cooling tower, the system will use cold outside air to cool server rooms during transitional seasons and winter. This is expected to reduce the operating burden on cooling tower fans and chillers and improve the cooling energy efficiency of the data center.
Kim Bong-kyun, chief executive of KT Cloud, said the Ansan data center is "a project that reflects power and cooling infrastructure optimized for high-density AI servers along with next-generation design technology." He added, "We will provide stable and efficient AI infrastructure and respond actively to customers' diverse technological needs."
