How money comes, goes and grows

Money has three important movements in our lives. It comes in, goes out, and, when we understand how to put it to work, it can grow.
These movements help explain why earning money and building wealth are not the same thing. The issue is not income alone, but what happens to it after it arrives.

Money Comes When We Create Value

Money generally comes to us when we offer something another person or organisation is willing to pay for. It may be a product, a professional skill, a service, an idea or a solution to a problem.

An employee earns a salary by contributing to an organisation. A business owner earns revenue by meeting customers’ needs. A consultant is paid for expertise, while an entrepreneur may earn from building a system that delivers value. In each case, money changes hands because something useful is being provided in return.

But creating value does not automatically guarantee a high income. Demand, the scarcity of a skill, bargaining power, access to customers and the ability to communicate value all influence what a person earns. Two people can work equally hard and receive very different financial rewards.

Increasing income may therefore require more than working longer hours. It may involve developing a sought-after skill, solving a more significant problem, reaching a wider market or finding a better way to deliver what people need. Still, earning more is only the beginning. Income creates possibilities; it does not decide what those possibilities become.

Money Goes When We Exchange It

Every time we spend money, we exchange it for something: food, shelter, transportation, education, convenience, entertainment or an experience. Spending is not inherently bad. Money is meant to serve a purpose, and meeting our needs and enjoying life are part of that purpose.
The question is what we receive in return and whether the exchange reflects our priorities.

Imagine two professionals earning the same income. One covers living expenses and personal enjoyment while deliberately setting aside a portion for future goals. The other spends nearly everything earned, upgrading their lifestyle whenever their income increases. Both may look successful, but their financial positions can gradually diverge.

The difference is not necessarily how much they earn. It is how much they use, what they retain and what they do with the resources left over. A pay increase does not automatically produce financial progress if every increase is matched by new expenses.

Money leaving our hands is not the problem. It has to move to meet needs and fulfil plans. The important question is whether we are making conscious exchanges or allowing every available naira to find a use before deciding what matters most.

Money Grows When We Put It to Work

The third movement is allocating some money towards a future benefit rather than using it all for present consumption.

Depending on the opportunity, an investment may generate income, appreciate in value or produce returns that can be reinvested. A business may generate profits; certain property investments may produce rental income; and financial instruments may offer interest or other returns according to their terms.

These options differ in risk, costs, liquidity and time horizon, and no investment is guaranteed to make money. A sensible choice depends on the investor’s goals, circumstances and ability to withstand losses.

Not every naira must be invested. Money needed for essential expenses or emergencies may need to remain accessible. Where circumstances allow, however, some income can be directed towards creating options for tomorrow.

When returns are reinvested, growth may compound over time. The outcome depends on the investment, the returns achieved, the costs involved and how long the money remains invested. Understanding these factors is more useful than chasing promises of quick wealth.

The Three Movements Work Together

Consider a person whose income rises over several years. If their spending rises at the same pace and nothing is allocated towards future goals, the higher income may change their lifestyle without greatly changing their long-term financial position.

Now imagine that the person also reviews spending, retains a manageable portion of income and gradually directs it towards suitable savings and investments. The income has not changed in this comparison; the allocation has.

Creating value brings money in. Spending directs it towards present needs and wants. Investing may help some of it contribute to future income or financial security. Without income, there may be little to allocate. Without thoughtful spending, income can disappear before it serves longer-term goals. Without suitable saving and investing, a person may depend entirely on future earnings to meet future needs.

We cannot always control when income arrives or when an unexpected expense appears. But we can keep learning how to create value, make deliberate spending decisions and evaluate the options available for our money.

Money is not simply something to earn and spend. It is a resource that can serve the life we live today and, when managed intentionally, help prepare us for the life we want tomorrow.
