THE COLONY – Argyle was, well, Argyle on a cold, windy Friday night at Tommy Briggs Stadium.
That simply means the No. 3 ranked team in Class 5A Division II, after a 56-14 victory over The Colony, is all but assured of another district championship, with bigger dreams awaiting beyond that.
Argyle has now won seven straight after a season-opening loss to Oak Grove (Ca.) and is 4-0 in District 3-5A Division II play. The Colony (5-2, 1-2) is still in the running for their first playoff spot since 2019.
Argyle led 21-0 after the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime, having outgained The Colony 405-83 in just the first two quarters alone.
“We kind of overwhelmed them in the beginning of the game,” Argyle coach Todd Rodgers said. “Got 21 points lickety-split. I was very pleased with that. Our kicking game was critical tonight and I thought that might be the case.”

Argyle has won 32 straight district games since moving to 5A five years ago and has won 16 district championships in the past 17 seasons with dominating performances like this.
“I think we took care of business well and prepared throughout the week,” middle linebacker Brody Bomar said. “We knew they were going to run their quarterback a lot and that’s what we prepared for, being physical at the point of attack. I feel we just have to keep going week by week, practicing hard and getting it done.”
Quarterback Hayes Hackney was able to operate comfortably behind his offensive line of Memphis Esley, Reese Scooter, Patrick Mann, Coleman Jackman and Braxton Firestone, and completed his first 16 passes on the night.
He finished 22-24 for 320 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Michah DeLeon. Julian Caldwell had nine catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Hackney now has 32 touchdown passes over eight games while averaging 321 yards passing per game.
“It was just fun,” Hackney said. “Everything was working for the offense, the line was blocking, the receivers were running their routes, the coach called great plays; all we had to do was execute. My line was really strapping it up, so it made it easy to distribute the ball to my receivers.”
Argyle’s defense, led by Bomar, held The Colony to 261 total yards. Argyle’s defensive front three of Cavyn Burke, Max Cantley and Reno Hermann put on a fierce pass rush, supported by outside linebackers T.J. Kuykendall, Chapman Emeterio and Liam Ladd.
Bomar set the tone for the night with a sack of quarterback Jaylen Gaines on The Colony’s first possession, a three-and-out. Defensive back Brayden Offner had one big play when he blocked a second-quarter punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Argyle defensive back Walker Bruce had an interception that also set up a touchdown.
Argyle hosts Colleyville Heritage on Friday and a win will officially clinch the district title. Other goals await for a program that has won two state championships, including a 16-0 run in 2020.
“We’ve got some injuries and we’ve got some kids coming back,” Rodgers said. “We’re trying to deepen our depth chart and get some kids trained and get in there to fit because it’s still a long ways to go.”
