An isolated high-altitude depression, dubbed Storm Adam, has caused widespread delays and cancellations at Palma Airport on Sunday. The airports authority Aena has not provided specific figures regarding the number of affected flights or average delay times, but information screens have confirmed the delay of numerous flights.
On social media, air traffic controllers stated that Sunday was set to be another challenging day, following a difficult Saturday. "Storm cells are forecast for the south and east of the mainland, as well as the Balearic Islands." Ibiza Airport has been hit by flooding in the area. The access road has been closed in both directions.
Controllers explained that adverse weather conditions have necessitated air traffic flow management measures "to ensure safety". "Many routes passing through these sectors of the airspace will experience ground delays, as the Eurocontrol algorithm assigns specific take-off times. The vital work of meteorologists allows us to anticipate these situations. Another day to pack some extra patience if you’re planning to fly."
As well as issues at the airport, Palma Town Hall has taken usual precautionary measures and closed certain areas. The Ribera and Can Terrers parks are closed until 7pm on Monday. The Paseo Sagrera and Bellver Park will close at midnight on Sunday and not reopen until 2pm on Monday.
