The Golden State Valkyries are only in the second year of their existence in the WNBA. And yet here they are, needing to win just three more games to secure the franchise’s first championship after grabbing a 68-64 victory in Game 1 against the Atlanta Dream. Both teams had rough shooting nights to begin the WNBA Finals, but in the end, it was the Valkyries that executed when it mattered the most.
With points being at a premium, having someone who can simply generate open looks all while having the ability to make difficult shots could make all the difference. The Valkyries have that in star guard Gabby Williams, who finished with a game-high 26 points on 8-22 shooting from the field.
The signing of Williams this past offseason has certainly elevated a middling playoff team to a full-blown title contender. And for two-time WNBA champion and five-time All-Star Kelsey Plum, she has always seen Williams as this impactful of a player even when she was still more of a role player with the Seattle Storm.

“WNBA fans are now getting a taste of who Gabby Williams is. But if you’ve played overseas or if you’ve watched Gabby for years, Gabby’s been one of the best players in the world for the last four or five years,” Plum said in an appearance on the “Girls Tripp” podcast.

The Valkyries believed that Williams can be more than just a designated defensive stopper. She can shoulder a huge offensive workload as well, as seen in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, and Plum is delighted to see Williams break out after biding her time.
“It’s awesome to see somebody that has basically just waited her turn but has always played the right way,” Plum added. “But Gabby’s always been an extremely smart, competitive, play both sides of the ball, winning basketball player. And I think (Valkyries head coach) Natalie Nakase has just been like, ‘We’re going to throw you the keys. Take off.'”
In seven games thus far in the 2026 WNBA playoffs, Williams has put up 23.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 43/38/91 shooting splits.
