Drova 2: Torn Lands hands-on: How promising is this German 2D RPG with Gothic vibes?

When discussing recent German indie success stories, Enshrouded usually comes to mind first, quickly followed by Drova: Forsaken Kin. It comes as little surprise, then, that Deck13 Spotlight and Just2D Interactive already have a sequel in the pipeline: Drova 2: Torn Lands. While it doesn't have a firm release date yet, I spent ample time with the title at an event in Magdeburg. The demo proved quite substantial for those willing to dive into side quests—a traditional strength of the series. Skipping them to rush through the main path meant missing out on the genuine highs and lows of farm life. A quick heads-up: the demo appears to cover the opening section of the game, so stop reading now if you want to go in completely spoiler-free.

Set on and around a farm, the demo immediately showcased the game's cheeky charm and slightly exaggerated characterization. From a somewhat work-shy, artistically inclined shepherd to the confident, outspoken daughter of the domineering farm owner, the characters sport clearly defined personalities. True to classic Gothic tradition, early quests prioritize running errands over brutal combat. Drova 2: Torn Lands certainly keeps you moving back and forth—a design loop you need to enjoy—but rewards your legwork with humorous dialogue that fits the tone without feeling overly subtle. You also catch glimpses of the darker side of farm life, including hinted struggles with addiction. Tone and atmosphere remain central pillars here: while Drova 2 definitely channels Gothic's signature vibe, the demo felt noticeably more welcoming, even as underlying tensions simmered beneath the surface.

At its core, the central gameplay loop remains unchanged from the predecessor. You still need to master the active combat system; fail to do so, and even minor skirmishes will send you packing or drain your supply of healing herbs. Still, the demo delivered that classic Gothic power curve: while you might tread cautiously along main paths at first, two hours of play, a handful of errand quests, 10 additional strength points, and a fresh set of armor turn basic enemies into minor nuisances. Overall, the demo left a strong impression, with its small- and large-scale storytelling leaving a desire for more. Whether the progression system maintains its momentum over a full playthrough remains to be seen, but the foundation is solid. The sequel introduces unique, faction-specific abilities, which I tested in a dedicated combat mode featuring high-level characters and equally formidable foes. Ultimately, this opening preview leaves a very promising impression.

The event offered plenty of opportunities to speak directly with the developers. One message came through loud and clear: Drova 2: Torn Lands is driven by a distinct creative vision that aims to respect players' time while intentionally omitting certain hand-holding features, such as automatic quest markers. Instead, players must buy maps and place markers manually. Omitting fast travel while claiming to respect player time creates an obvious tension, but in the demo, traversing the world consistently yielded meaningful rewards—even if only a witty conversation. Our discussions also confirmed that Drova 2 isn't designed to be brutally punishing, a point my time with the demo supported. Diligently tackling side content makes combat noticeably more manageable. This design choice serves immersion well: your protagonist builds strength hauling grain and repairing fences before throwing a frail frame at a bear. For players who still find the experience daunting, modding support should offer a relief valve down the line. The developers actively collaborate with modders and recognize the community's value, though a fully integrated in-game mod launcher is unlikely to feature at launch.
