RANAU: Continuous heavy rain since 4pm today has triggered landslides and flash floods in several areas around Kundasang, including an incident in which a Perodua Kancil was believed to have been swept away by floodwaters and overturned at the edge of a village road.
The car was found overturned in a landslide area near the main access road to Kampung Sinisian, also known as Kampung Gorowot.
Ranau district police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said police received information about the landslide and flash flood in Kampung Sinisian at 5.58pm.
He said an inspection found the car overturned at the roadside, with the affected landslide area estimated to cover 223 square metres.
"However, no casualties were reported.
"Heavy rain had been falling in the area since 4pm," he said when contacted tonight.
Mursalin said police also received a report of a landslide behind Surau Al-Taqwah in Kampung Dumpiring Bawah, Kundasang, at 5.19pm.
The affected area was estimated to cover 74 square metres, with no casualties reported.
"In a separate incident, an overflow of water mixed with rocks also affected the main road from Kampung Pahu to Kampung Himbaan in Bundu Tuhan.
"An inspection about 8pm found that a culvert was blocked, causing water and rocks to spill onto the road," he said.
Mursalin said eight workers from DCTF Group were at the scene to clear the affected route.
Police personnel from Bundu Tuhan Police Post and the Kundasang patrol team also inspected and monitored the affected areas.
