A Bluetooth speaker can make PlayStation games louder and clearer, but plugging one in directly doesn’t work with every model. The PS5 doesn’t support most standard Bluetooth audio devices, and the PS4 has limits of its own. A TV, an audio adapter or a plain cable can get the game sound to a speaker anyway.
Connect a Bluetooth Speaker Through a TV
A TV with Bluetooth audio support is one of the easiest options. Start by linking the PS5 or PS4 to the TV with an HDMI cable. Switch the speaker on and put it into pairing mode. Then open the TV’s settings, look for the Bluetooth or sound output menu, and pick the speaker from the list.
Once the two are paired, game sound should come out of the speaker. Menu names vary by brand and model. Some TVs only support Bluetooth headphones and have no speaker option, so the manual is worth a look before setting up.
Use a Bluetooth Audio Transmitter
A Bluetooth transmitter picks up sound from a TV or another audio output and sends it to a wireless speaker. It’s handy when the TV has no Bluetooth audio of its own. The transmitter needs to match an available connection, such as a 3.5 mm audio jack or optical output.
Plug it into the right port, turn on its pairing mode, and do the same on the speaker. Both devices should connect once they’re in pairing mode. A USB transmitter doesn’t always work when plugged straight into a PS5 or PS4, so console compatibility should be confirmed in the product details before buying.

Connect a Speaker with an AUX Cable
A wired connection sidesteps Bluetooth pairing trouble altogether. First, check that the speaker has a 3.5 mm auxiliary (AUX) input. If the TV or monitor has a matching audio output, run a suitable cable between them, pick that output in the TV settings and set the volume.
The PS5’s DualSense controller and the standard PS4 controller both have a 3.5 mm headset jack too. The speaker has to support the right cable connection for that port, though. It can suit a small speaker with an AUX input, but a direct TV connection usually gives a cleaner setup.
Set Up an HDMI Audio Extractor
An HDMI audio extractor helps when a monitor has no built-in speakers or a useful audio output. Plug the console into the extractor’s HDMI input, then run its HDMI output to the TV or monitor. After that, connect the extractor’s audio output to a compatible speaker or a Bluetooth transmitter.
Before buying, check what the extractor supports in terms of resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), refresh rate and High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). A mismatch can hurt picture quality or stop the console sending a signal at all. PS4 owners should also check their console model, since the CUH-2000 series has no optical digital audio output.
Fix Common Bluetooth Speaker Problems
If the speaker doesn’t show up in the Bluetooth list, disconnect it from any nearby phones or computers and put it back into pairing mode. If the PS5 says the Bluetooth audio device isn’t supported, switch to a compatible TV connection, a transmitter or a wired path.
Sound still coming from the TV instead of the speaker usually means the wrong output is selected, so check the settings on both the TV and the console. If audio lags behind the action, try a wired connection or turn on the TV’s game mode or low-latency audio setting. For sudden dropouts, charge the speaker, move it closer to the transmitter and cut down on nearby wireless interference.
Choose the Best Audio Setup for Gaming
The best option depends on the game and the gear on hand. Wired connections tend to suit competitive games, where footsteps and other cues have to line up exactly with the action. A TV-based Bluetooth link is fine for casual play, when going wireless matters more than a slight delay.
A Bluetooth speaker can play game audio, but voice chat may need a separate compatible microphone or headset. For surround sound, a compatible soundbar or audio-video receiver gives more options than a basic portable speaker.

Final Thoughts
A direct Bluetooth connection can fail even when the speaker pairs fine with a phone. A TV with Bluetooth audio is a simple fallback, while a transmitter or HDMI audio extractor helps with trickier setups. The right choice depends on the console model, the TV’s ports, the speaker’s inputs and the desired sound quality. Checking those details first saves time and avoids buying an adapter that won’t work.
FAQs
1. Can I connect a Bluetooth speaker directly to a PS5?
The PS5 does not support most standard Bluetooth audio devices directly. Use a compatible TV, Bluetooth transmitter or wired audio connection instead.
2. Can I connect a Bluetooth speaker to a PS4?
Yes, but direct Bluetooth audio support is limited. A Bluetooth-compatible TV, suitable audio transmitter or wired connection can provide an alternative.
3. How do I connect a Bluetooth speaker to PlayStation through my TV?
Connect the PS4 or PS5 to the TV using HDMI, put the speaker into pairing mode, then select it from the TV’s Bluetooth audio settings.
4. Why is my Bluetooth speaker audio delayed while gaming?
Bluetooth transmission and TV audio processing can introduce latency. Try a wired connection or enable your TV’s Game Mode or low-latency audio setting.
5. Do I need an HDMI audio extractor to connect a speaker?
Not always. An extractor is useful when your TV or monitor lacks a suitable audio output. Check its resolution, HDR, refresh-rate and HDCP compatibility before purchasing
