Kathmandu, October 13
Saru Joshi, ambassador nominee to Germany, has outlined plans to strengthen bilateral relations by prioritising economic and labour diplomacy, promoting Nepal’s information technology sector and attracting high-spending tourists.
Presenting her action plan at a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee on Tuesday, Joshi said she would work to reduce the trade deficit, promote tourism, protect Nepali workers’ rights and improve labour migration management.
Noting that Nepal and Germany will mark 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2028, she said the milestone would be used to further expand bilateral cooperation.
Joshi said she would work to increase exports of Nepali products, including carpets, pashmina, handicrafts and herbal goods, by exploring market opportunities in Germany. She also plans to pursue the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade facility to address potential challenges following Nepal’s graduation from the least developed country category.
She said Nepal’s competitive IT workforce should be promoted in European markets.
On labour diplomacy, Joshi pledged to strengthen the implementation of agreements with Germany on skilled worker exchanges and improve labour management and protection of Nepali workers across Europe.
For tourism promotion, she plans to attract high-spending German visitors through digital campaigns in collaboration with influential figures and media professionals.
She also pledged to address administrative barriers to Germany’s vocational training programmes in Nepal and expand cooperation between Nepali and German educational and research institutions.
