Durga Puja is being celebrated peacefully at more than 33,000 mandaps across the country, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir said, urging people to remain cautious about rumours amid attempts to spread confusion surrounding the festival.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting security arrangements at Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka this evening (17 October).
The IGP said celebrations were proceeding peacefully across the country with the support and coordination of Puja celebration committees. He expressed hope that the festivities would continue smoothly until the immersion of the idols.
"Regardless of our religion, beliefs or caste, this country belongs to all of us. Our goal is to eliminate all evil forces and build a happy, peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh," he said.
Drawing a parallel with Goddess Durga's fight against evil, Ali Hossain urged people to unite against evil forces and remain vigilant against rumours.
Recalling the situation following 5 August, he said police activities had come to a halt for five to seven days, leaving people without security and causing widespread concern. Various crimes, including mugging, robbery and dacoity, took place during that period, he added.
"With your cooperation, Bangladesh Police has recovered from that situation," he said.
The IGP expressed hope that the country would work to eliminate evil forces, injustice and discrimination, safeguard its independence and sovereignty, and improve people's living standards.
Meanwhile, leaders of Puja celebration committees thanked the police for arranging security at all mandaps, saying the measures had allowed people to celebrate the festival safely.
Senior police officials and leaders of the Puja celebration committees were present during the visit.
