Augustine Paul Kasasa and Ronald Fisher Mundere are accused of obtaining Shs520 million from a Chinese national in a purported land sale in Kololo, as their applications for bail await determination.
A lawyer and a land investigations expert have been remanded to Luzira Prison over allegations of defrauding a Chinese national of Shs520 million in a purported land transaction involving property in Kololo, Kampala.
The accused, Augustine Paul Kasasa, a lawyer attached to Barnabus Dyadi and Co. Advocates, and Ronald Fisher Mundere, a land investigations expert, appeared before Nakawa Court Magistrate Frank Namanya, where they sought release on bail.
Their applications were presented through their lawyers, Peterson Mwesiga and Ezaketh Owori, who submitted several proposed sureties in support of their clients' requests for temporary release as the case proceeds.
The proposed sureties included Erias Karambuzi, Aramathan Byaruhanga, Abel Bwogyero, Noah Mawagali Bwete, Jackie Nanjala and Veronica Nakanyike.
However, the court did not immediately determine the bail applications after prosecution counsel Mahatma Odongo asked for more time to review the documents submitted in support of the requests.
The prosecution's request delayed consideration of the applications as the court awaited further scrutiny of the documents presented by the defence.
Kasasa and Mundere are accused of allegedly obtaining Shs520 million from the Chinese national after reportedly promising to sell him land in the upscale Kololo neighbourhood of Kampala.
The case centres on the alleged land transaction, although details of the proposed sale and the evidence supporting the accusations have yet to be fully presented in court.
The two accused remain on remand at Luzira Prison as the proceedings continue. The allegations against them have not been proved, and they are presumed innocent unless convicted by a competent court.
