Going gray doesn't have to mean a dramatic breakup with color. After years of less-than-favorable at-home root touch-ups and the occasional box-dye mishap, the shift can be gradual and considered instead. Kate Moss and Salma Hayek have embraced their natural silver strands while keeping their color soft.
The secret is “root tapping”: a technique that diffuses the demarcation line between new growth (gray) and colored hair, creating a seamless, natural-looking blend. Rather than committing to all-over silver, it adds softness, shine, and dimension, making the transition feel even more effortless.

What Is Root Tapping?
For women beginning to embrace their natural gray, root tapping offers a softer, lower-maintenance alternative to regular root touch-ups and permanent color. The technique uses semi-permanent color at the root to blend grays with the rest of the hair, creating a more seamless grow-out and avoiding a stark demarcation line. As the color gradually fades, new growth appears more subtly.
Katie Collins, color specialist at Haug London Haus, says: “In the salon, we refer to this as our ‘lip gloss method’ as it adds color, shine, and fullness to hair but doesn’t offer the same level of coverage as a lipstick would.” She also notes that it can cover up to 70 percent of gray hair.
