Police have seized a Toyota Fortuner allegedly involved in the death of a four-year-old pet dog named Kai in Gulshan, but have yet to confirm who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.
The car was seized from a house in Gulshan last night (14 October), while efforts are under way to arrest the driver, investigators said.
Sub-Inspector Shakhawat Hossain, the investigating officer of the case at Gulshan Police Station, told The Business Standard, "The vehicle mentioned in the case statement has been seized. Efforts are under way to arrest the driver."
Police sources said they were looking for a driver named Shamsul Alam. However, they have yet to establish who was behind the wheel when the incident occurred.
Kai's owner, Ipsa Nazia Adiba, has expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation, questioning why it has taken so long to identify the driver despite the filing of a case.
Speaking to TBS, Adiba said she could not understand why police were taking so long to verify the driver's identity after the case was filed.
The incident occurred around 9am on 22 September on Road 63 in Gulshan-2. Adiba alleged that a black Toyota Fortuner ran over Kai while the dog was on the road and then sped away.
Security guards at nearby buildings reportedly tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not get out.
CCTV footage showed the vehicle running over the dog. However, identifying the car proved difficult initially because its registration number was not clearly visible in the footage. Adiba later sought help from Gulshan residents to identify the vehicle.
Adiba filed a case over Kai's death at Gulshan Police Station on 12 October, naming the vehicle's registration number in the complaint.
