Around 100 jerrycans were found in the early hours of this morning near the fishing harbour at Assenta Beach, in São Pedro da Cadeira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, (Lisbon district), a source from the GNR told Lusa.
The same source from the National Republican Guard (GNR) said the jerry cans, found at 3:30 am, contained about 2,000 litres of fuel.
Authorities also found a bag containing €1,000 in cash, a mobile phone and an identity document.
At 12:15 pm, officers from the GNR, the Maritime Police and the Judicial Police were at the scene; the Judicial Police are now leading the investigation.
This is just the latest discovery after weeks of similar incidents reported throughout the country – all of them linked to suspected drug trafficking.
The sheer number of incidents hints at the pressure Portuguese authorities are under, and suggests a lot of activity is still underway that may be evading authorities’ notice.
