Kim Jong-un has appeared in newly released photographs after unverified online claims alleged that the North Korean leader had died. State media reported that he visited a garment and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang on Monday, October 19. His wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter, Ju-ae, accompanied him during the visit.
The Korean Central News Agency and Korean Central Television released reports about the visit on Tuesday, October 20. Images showed Kim inspecting women’s clothing, children’s shoes and other products while speaking with officials. The appearance came as rumours circulated on social media claiming he had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage.

The claims reportedly originated from Chinese dissident Xie Wanjum, who is based in the United States. Xie also alleged that China had deployed troops to Pyongyang amid concerns about a possible succession crisis. However, no independently verified evidence has supported these allegations.
The rumours also fuelled speculation that Kim’s younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, had taken power. Other online discussions focused on whether his daughter, Ju-ae, could eventually succeed him. However, no credible information has confirmed a leadership transition in North Korea.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reportedly told lawmakers in September that Kim weighed around 140 kilograms, raising concerns about possible cardiovascular risks. However, the agency did not report clear evidence of a serious health crisis, and the latest photographs challenge claims that he had died.
