SENAPATI, Oct 21: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati has expressed grave concern over repeated incidents of violence, attacks on civilian settlements in Kamjong district.
"The violent incidents carried out by the armed cadres of the Kuki National Army–Burma (KNA-B), in association with the Village Volunteers of Eastern Zone (VVEZ), as well as the actions of the Assam Rifles, warrant
serious attention and an impartial examination by the competent authorities," it said in statement.
On October 17 morning, armed cadres belonging to the Kuki National Army–Burma (KNA-B), in collaboration with the Village Volunteers of Eastern Zone (VVEZ), launched an attack on Tangkhul Naga civilians near Kamjong police station gate and Chassad public ground. Three civilians were injured in the attack, it said.
In the backdrop, the NPO alleged that residential areas were bombed causing damage to household properties and loss of livestock, and placing the lives and safety of innocent residents at grave risk. The explosions caused widespread fear and panic among vulnerable villagers, particularly women, children, elderly persons and the sick, it said.
In another incident, abandoned residential houses in Skipe and Pilong villages, situated along the Indo-Myanmar border under Kamjong subdivision, were set ablaze in the morning of October 18, said the NPO.
These villages (Skipe and Pilong) were deserted by their residents due to the repeated incidents of aggression and security threats posed by cadres of KNA-B and VVEZ. The burning of the abandoned houses has further deepened the insecurity and uncertainty faced by the affected villagers, NPO said.
Notably, the NPO said, the Tangkhul Naga villages of Z Choro, Wanglee and Namlee were also attacked on May 7; Pilong on September 24; and Ningchou on October 10. Huimin Thana village and Kherongram, a hamlet of Nampisha village, were attacked on July 1. Six innocent Tangkhul Naga civilians have lost in the repeated aggression, the NPO said.
Even as villages in Kamjong district continue to face repeated attacks, the Government of India and the Government of Manipur have not yet taken up adequate measures to secure the villages and the lives of the people, the NPO said.
Further negligence by the Governments may aggravate the already volatile situation, said the NPO, urging all authorities concerned to act promptly and decisively and protect the villages.
