A man allegedly bit his wife in several places and repeatedly struck her head with a stone after becoming angry over being served potato curry for dinner in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said on Thursday.
The woman was left critically injured and unconscious. Her condition has since improved, while police have registered a case of attempted murder and intentional insult against her husband, who is absconding.
The incident took place on the evening of October 12 in Domampur village. The accused has been identified as Om Prakash Vishwakarma and his wife as Preeti Vishwakarma, 40.
Circle Officer Rajiv Kumar Singh said Om Prakash asked his wife for food that evening. When she served him potato curry, he questioned why she had prepared the dish. Preeti told him that she had cooked whatever was available at home.
Enraged by her response, Om Prakash allegedly assaulted her, biting her in several places and repeatedly hitting her head with a stone. He fled after she fell unconscious, Singh said.
The couple's children cried out after seeing their mother lying unconscious. Neighbours then took her to a community health centre and alerted the police. She was referred to the district hospital the same night because of the severity of her injuries.
Based on a complaint lodged by Preeti on Wednesday, police registered a case against Om Prakash under Sections 109(1), relating to attempt to murder, and 352, relating to intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police said efforts were underway to arrest Om Prakash.
