Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery on a jaw injury sustained during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The Argentina international was stretchered off after a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, prompting immediate medical attention.
Martinez was replaced by 21-year-old Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut as Chelsea secured victory through Pedro Neto’s second-half brace.
Initial reports from Argentine journalist Gaston Edul indicated that Martinez required jaw surgery, although scans reportedly ruled out significant injuries to his head, neck and back.
Following the operation, Martinez took to social media to reassure supporters, sharing a selfie from his hospital bed and confirming that the procedure had gone well.
“Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well,” Martinez said. “The most important thing is that we won and with a bow at 0. We’ll be back in a few weeks.”
The clean sheet against Everton was Martinez’s first in six appearances since his summer transfer to Stamford Bridge.
It also ended Chelsea’s 22-match run without a clean sheet in the Premier League.
Before Saturday’s encounter, the Argentine had conceded 11 goals in his opening five appearances for the London club.
With Martinez sidelined, Penders could get further opportunities to feature during Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised the young goalkeeper’s composure and readiness after he came on against Everton.
“Mike has personality,” Alonso said. “He’s brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on. He played in the cup games and whenever he’s needed.”
